Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions we hear most about JournL. For the full details, see our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy.
Account & Sign-in
Do I need to create a JournL password?
No. JournL uses Sign in with Apple, so there's no separate JournL password to create or remember. Access to your Apple ID is what controls access to your account, so keep your Apple ID and device secure.
Is there a minimum age to use JournL?
You must be at least 13 years old. If you're under 18, you should only use JournL with a parent or legal guardian's consent.
Privacy & Your Data
Is my journal actually private?
Yes. Your entries are stored directly on your device, not on JournL's servers — we don't have access to what you write. If you turn on iCloud sync, entries also travel through your own private iCloud account so they're available on your other devices, still without passing through our servers.
Does the AI chat send my entries to the cloud?
No. Chat replies, welcome messages, and journal summaries are generated entirely on-device using Apple's Foundation Models framework. Your prompts and journal content never leave your device for these features — JournL doesn't send them to us or to any third-party AI provider.
AI Features
What if my device doesn't support Apple Intelligence?
Chat and other on-device AI features need a device that supports Apple Intelligence. If yours doesn't, those features won't be available, but you can still review and edit any previous journal entries synced to that device.
Do I need an internet connection to journal?
No. Writing entries and chatting with the on-device AI both work offline, since they run locally on your device. An internet connection is only needed for signing in and for iCloud sync, if you've turned it on.
Sync & Backup
Will I lose my journal if I lose my phone or get a new one?
If you've enabled iCloud sync, your entries live in your own private iCloud account and will be there when you sign in on a new device. iCloud sync is off by default, so if it isn't turned on, your journal exists only on that one device — turning it on before you switch devices is the safest way to avoid losing entries.
Can I export my journal entries?
There's no built-in export option today. Your entries stay fully yours on your device (and in your own iCloud account, if sync is on) — you can view, edit, or delete any entry directly in the app at any time.
Security
How does the Face ID lock work, and what if it fails?
JournL can lock the app behind your device's Face ID, Touch ID, or passcode. If verification fails, you're prompted to try again. If your device has no biometrics or passcode set up at all, JournL won't lock you out — the lock only applies when your device itself supports it.
Account Management
How do I delete my account or my data?
You can delete your account directly in the app, which also removes your locally stored journal (any copy in your own iCloud account remains under your control via Apple). To request deletion of your server-side account record separately, email us at info@journlapp.com.
Support
Is JournL a substitute for therapy or medical advice?
No. JournL is a personal journaling tool, not a substitute for professional medical, psychological, financial, or legal advice. If you're experiencing a medical or mental health emergency, contact emergency services or a crisis line in your area immediately — in the US, the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is available by call or text.
